The Board of Directors of the National Association of Japan-America Societies (NAJAS) announces an opening for the position of President. Mid August is the preferred starting date, but could be adjusted under special circumstances.

Position: President
Preferred starting date: August 15, 2009 or soon thereafter

Responsibilities:

The President serves as the chief operating officer of the association and reports directly to the Chairman of NAJAS, the Executive Committee and the full Board.  The President and Chairman, in conjunction with the Board, set the strategic vision for the organization and the strategy to implement goals and objectives.

The NAJAS President will work with the Chairman and Officers of the Board to:

* Serve as an advocate and spokesperson for the Japan-America Society network to key external groups and individuals from the US and Japanese governments, as well as Japanese and American business, non-governmental organizations, universities and think tanks, foundations, and others, and seek support as appropriate

* Provide information on programs, speakers, activities, events and funding sources to member societies. Offer quality programs to NAJAS member societies in support of the mission.

* Serve as an information resource about the Japan-America Society network and the US-Japan relationship at the grassroots level  

* Facilitate cooperation and information sharing among the Societies to include providing managerial support, mentoring, advice, and guidance to members as appropriate

* Organize regional and national meetings to facilitate information and idea sharing

*Cultivate and enhance relationships with America-Japan Societies and the National Association of America-Japan Societies (Japan).

 

In conjunction with the above, a major responsibility of the President is to solicit new sources of funding from philanthropic and corporate sectors, manage these funds and insure their effective implementation and to work closely with the Chairman and the Executive Committee to build the financial base of the organization.

Further, the President will establish administrative policy and procedures for the office personnel regarding the working environment, vacation, sick leave etc.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education:  bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred
  • Management experience, including budget preparation/implementation, working with non-profit boards and program development
  • Demonstrated success in raising funds from individuals and corporations, and in grant solicitation
  • Ability to nurture, develop and maintain productive interpersonal relationships among a diverse range of people
  • Demonstrated appreciation of Japanese culture and a commitment to strengthening the US-Japan relationship; one year or more living experience in Japan preferred
  • Languages competence:  equivalent to native-speaker fluency in both written and spoken English required; ability to communicate orally in Japanese in a professional setting preferred
  • Familiarity with computer and Internet technology and its potential application for the NAJAS network

Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience.

Internship


 

NAJAS offers internships to college students majoring such fileds as international relations, East Asian studies, nonprofit management. Preferred applicants will have demonstrated a strong interest in, but not limited to, Japan, U.S.-Japan relations, public and nonprofit management.

Applications are welcomed, and internships are granted on a rolling basis. However, you are encouraged to apply well in advance of the intended first date of your internship at NAJAS.

Interns are essential part of NAJAS operations, and as such, your committment and enthusiasm will be highly valued.

Please note that the internship is non-paid, but commuting costs will be reimbursed.
