Employment Opportunities
The Japan-America Society staff is small, but full-time and part-time
employment opportunities sometimes are available. When this happens,
they are announced in the What’s New section on the top page of this website, as well as in the Society’s electronic newsletter, the Nichi-Bei News.
If you are interested in a position in the Washington area that
utilizes your Japan-related background, you might also consider using
the Society’s resume circulation service.
Internships
Internships with the Society are available to a limited number of
college students each term. Internships are unpaid positions. Depending
on the university’s internship program, credit sometimes is
offered. Interns must pledge to work a minimum of three full days a
week for a period of no less than eight weeks.
The Japan-America Society is not a think tank, or policy or research
institution. Because we are a membership society that produces many
programs and events each year, interns should expect that in addition
to Japan-related content, their workday will include a number of
administrative and managerial tasks. At the same time, interning with
the Society is a good introduction to the world of non-profit
organizations, allows you to interact with both Americans and Japanese,
and is a lot of fun as well! In addition, interns can develop skills
that will assist them in their future search for employment.
We also look for interns to fill positions related to the Society's
Sakura Matsuri--Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival and the Japan Bowl, as
well as support the Society's other cultural and educational programs.
Intern Applications
The application deadlines for interns are:
Spring semester: November 15
Fall semester: July 15
Summer: March 15

Among the skills and background we look for:
Good oral and written communication skills and a motivated attitude
Academic concentration in
Japanese and/or Asian Studies; Japanese Society and Culture;
International Business and Finance; International Affairs; Management;
or Business or Public Administration
Knowledge of Microsoft Office
(Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is required; knowledge of
specialized software programs such as FileMaker Pro, Dreamweaver,
QuickBooks, PhotoShop, etc. is desirable
Prior work or volunteer experience, including in managing student activities and events
Good Japanese language skills are desirable but not essential
Volunteer Opportunities
The Japan-America Society has many opportunities for volunteers. Volunteering with the Japan-America Society
is a great way to meet both Japanese and Americans while supporting international activities in the Washington DC area.
Each spring over 300 individuals are needed to help with the Sakura Matsuri-Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival and the Japan Bowl.

The Society also is looking for volunteers to help with its educational outreach programs in the area’s schools and libraries.
