The Nikko Kaido runs approximately due north from Edo, crossing the Kanto plain until it reaches Nikko. Nikko is the site of beautiful and ornate mausoleums where the first and the third Shoguns -- Tokugawa Ieyasu and Tokugawa Iemitsu -- are enshrined.

Every few years, the Nikko Kaido is the scene of a great and elaborate procession, as the current Shogun travels to Nikko to pay respects to his ancestors, accompanied by his major subordinate daimyo and countless servants, retainers and court followers.
