The Japan-America relationship is important since the combined output of these two countries accounts for 40% of global GNP.

1998 marked the 30th Anniversary of the Michigan-Shiga sister-state relationship.

Detroit and Toyota have enjoyed a sister-city relationship for 41 years.

There are more than 350 Japanese companies doing business in Michigan, most of them in the area of motor vehicles and parts. These companies employ 28,000 Americans.

The procurement of goods and services by Japanese companies in the area is estimated to be in the billions of dollars.

In November of 1998, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra made its Japanese debut with a Goodwill mission to Toyota City and Otsu.

There are layers and layers of relationships and resources between Michigan and Japan. The Japan America Society is the hub at the center of it all.

Despite the economic downturn in Asia, Japanese companies operating in Michigan experience the same economic cycles as other firms in the area. According to Crain's Detroit Business, Japanese companies here are not recession driven.

The Japanese government is very focused on making structural changes in Japan's economy. The changes include recapitalizing (with public money if necessary) the banks, enforcing international banking standards (regarding levels of capitalization, disclosure and transparency) and carrying out deregulation in other industries. These measures are restoring confidence and beginning to resuscitate Japan's domestic demand. This is refuelling other Asian economies that rely on the Japanese markets for their exports.

The top decision makers of local Japanese and American firms are directly involved in the Japan America Society. They serve as officers, as directors and participate in the Society's programs. There are plenty of opportunities to golf together on Michigan's many golf courses. At the Society's 5:01 CLUB, the atmosphere is quite casual and it's easy to converse with our local community leaders over sushi and drinks.

The Japan America Society provides excellent opportunities for American and Japanese manufacturers to meet and make contacts.
