The Society Welcomes
Another Bennett

LaShonda Bennett is the new Education Outreach Coordinator for the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania.

Minasama konnichiha!

To give you a little introduction about myself, I am 27 years old. I began studying Japanese as a student at South Fayette High School and was introduced to the JASP in 1996 when I participated in the annual Japanese Speech contest. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, where I studied Psychology and Japanese, I went to Japan as a participant on the JET Program. I taught English at two rural high schools in Iwate-ken for three years and at an elementary school for two years in Shiga-ken. Upon returning to Pittsburgh last month I was VERY LUCKY to secure a position with JASP! It feels good to come back to my hometown and have the opportunity to stay connected with Japan. I am anxious to contribute towards the improvement of the programs JASP facilitates and hope to continue increasing knowledge about Japan in my home country. Thanks and I look forward to meeting you in the future! Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

Japan America Society of Pennsylvania Mission Statement

The Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania
seeks to promote local understanding of and mutually beneficial participation in the changing
U.S.- Japan relationship by:

  • Providing relevant and timely Japan-related information to the public
  • Establishing dialogue between the state's Japanese and American business/professional communities
  • Introducing a forum for the presentation of cultural ideas and programming
  • Providing educational outreaches opportunities for teachers and students
  • Promoting good will concerning the U.S.-Japan relationship

The JASP logo, a calligraphic representation of Pittsburgh’s three rivers with the city's skyline at its confluence, has been a convenient visual representation of our core mission:
To serve as the go-to information source for and liaison between the Japanese and American business, cultural and educational communities in the Western Pennsylvania tri-state area.
