JASP Welcomes New Education and Outreach Coordinator!

JASP announces new Education and Outreach Coordinator Qianqian Miao has begun work as JASP's director of education and outreach.

A native of Beijing, Qianqian is a life-long Japan-o-phile, a newly minted graduate of CMU's H. John Heinz III's School of Public Policy and Management with an undergraduate degree in economics from Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing. Qianqian comes to JASP from our partners at the Silkscreen Festival and brings to the Society her considerable computer and design skills and her passion for non-profit management. She has worked at the Pittsburgh Symphony and Pittsburgh Opera, is a student of Sogetsu Ikebana and loves music and Miyazaki films.

Qianqian is able to work at the Society thanks to a grant from the Center for Global Partnership-Japan Foundation and will be focusing on organizing the annual Japanese Speech Contest and in the development of teacher training workshops on the green theme of "Mottainai," the Japanese concept of being a responsible steward to the Earth.

We warmly welcome you, Q!

Ponyo!

Ponyo, Hayao Miyazaki's long-awaited anime inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid," has opened in Pittsburgh.

If you would like to see previews of this film, the Japanese Trailer, and then the American trailer. It is Interesting to contrast the two.

Thinking Outside the Box
Japanese Obento Workshop

Oct. 12, 2009
8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Allegheny Intermediate Unit
475 East Waterfront Dr.
Homestead PA

This full-day workshop is designed to introduce Japanese culture to K-12 educators through the life of a lunch box, "Obento." Present in the everyday life of Japanese people of all ages, Obento is a boxed lunch that can be home made, ordered out or eaten in a restaurant and is always an attractive and satisfying meal. Each Obento is uniquely created, connecting its maker and those s/he made it for and ties together the rich food culture of Japan with the Japanese art of longevity -- living a healthy lifestyle with a good nutritional balance.

In a broader sense, the study of Obento varieties and styles also serves to tell the story of the stages in life of a typical Japanese person. Thoroughly researched and carefully designed, this workshop will provide effective tools for educators eager to introduce to their students the brilliant world of Japanese culture through an interesting and interactive platform.

To signup email workshop@us-japan.org or call Education and Outreach Coordinator Qianqian Miao at 412.567.5023.
