Message from the Chair
Andrew Read, Chair, 2005-2006

It has been my great privilege to serve as the Chair of our great organization.  Ever since Keri and I returned from living in Japan about 5 years ago, this organization has kept Japan close to us and served as a constant supporter of our relationships, personal and professional.  It has been so fitting to be able to celebrate this relationship with Ambassador Foley and our four award recipients, all laid the groundwork for the relationship we enjoy, all ambassadors in their own right.  Ifm honored that they have joined us this evening.

As you know, this has been a year of transition for the Society, a year in which our leader, Ed Reilly, has built on the foundation laid by Jeff Demetrescu and his predecessors.  If youfve been able to join us for any of our programs or gatherings, youfll agree that Ed has taken the baton and run with it.  His focus on our vitality, our membership, on the relevance of our programming has been evident from the day he took over the reigns of our organization.  Our mission has been and continues to be promoting the U.S – Japan relationship, and while we often find ourselves discussing whether we are a business, a cultural or a social organization, we consistently conclude that we are all of these, and that relationships and, more importantly, friendships are at the core of each.

Ifd be remiss if I didnft take a minute to thank a few people that make this organization run, namely Ed, Tomoko and Ruth.  Ifm very appreciative of my fellow Board members, especially those that serve on our various special committees.  The former chairs recognized earlier have served as wonderful mentors in addition to most recently serving as the 2006 nominating committee, and I thank them for that.  Our volunteers, the horsepower behind our events, deserve much credit, and wefre grateful for them.  And thank all of you for coming tonight and joining our celebration, we look forward to seeing you as our future events.

Thank you all for the privilege of serving.  My predecessors were correct in assuring me that would be extremely rewarding service.

I was very proud earlier this evening to announce Tom Sasaki as our incoming Chair and Dick Dudley as our incoming Chair-elect.  They will jointly lead our organization for the 2006-2007 fiscal year.  As Tom is unfortunately out of the country, Ifll ask Dick to join me up on the stage.  As my last official act as Chair, I take great pleasure in introducing Dick Dudley of Weyerhaeuser.
