Frank Ruffo, Executive Vice President, Sanyo Emeritus, and Roy Hori, Ph.D., Hori Nichibei Consulting, LLC, led a discussion on Long-Term Care for the Elderly in Japan. Ruffo leads a joint venture between Emeritus, a locally-based assisted-living management company, and Sanyo Electric in Japan, which to date has opened an elderly assisted living center in Japan and has plans for future centers. He addressed the issues in long term health care in Japan from the private sector point of view. Hori, who has many years of experience in Japan, introduced the subject to attendees.
Dr. Ryoichi Nagata, President & CEO of SNBL USA, Ltd. led a discussion on the Japanese Biomedical industry. Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories (SNBL) was originally founded in 1957 to conduct pre-clinical studies in for the specific purpose of approval of drugs in Japan. They now are an international company and Japan’s largest Contract Research Organization (CRO) active in all parts of the drug development process. He also discussed the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare’s requirements in the approval process of a drug in Japan and some of the latest changes.
Michael Birt, President of New Japan Ventures, LLC., and a recognized expert on the Japanese health system, led a discussion on "The Challenges and Opportunities of the Japanese Medical System."
