Highlights of the Japan-America Society Year

The following constitute, in the order they occurred, the major highlights of the 2000 year.

April 26, 2000

Takatoshi Katoh, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi
Reception hosted by Frank Russell Company

Takatoshi Katoh, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi At the reception, Takatoshi Katoh, former Special Advisor to the Minister of Finance and Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs and currently Advisor to the President, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, provided a Japanese perspective on the dramatic changes that are taking place in his country. This event, co-sponsored by the Shunju Club, also received support from the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi.

Japan's Information Age: The Internet and U.S.-Japan Relations in the 21st Century

Kazuhiko Nishi, ASCII Corporation An @Japan.com program. One of Japan's top high-tech figures, Dr. Kazuhiko Nishi provided an historical perspective on the information revolution and the impact it will have on world history and U.S.-Japan relations. At the luncheon, Dr. Nishi also discussed the current Japanese internet and e-commerce environments. This program was co-sponsored by Washington Software Alliance with the assistance of the Washington Strategy Group of Washington, D.C.


e-Commerce Mission to Japan

Ambassador Thomas Foley and JAS Executive Director Jeff Demetrescu addressed the attendees at the final reception at the Ambassador's Residence in TokyoThe Japan-America Society’s first IT Mission to Japan ventured to Tokyo for three intensive days (May 22-24, 2000) of industry briefings and networking receptions that allowed participants the opportunity to learn from first hand, in-country observations and discussions with Japanese and foreign IT leaders. Delegates were briefed on the following topics: the e-commerce in the Japanese market, establishing a presence in Japan, and Internet access in Japan.

Doing Business in Japan:
Three Former ACCJ Presidents Look to the Future

Reilly, Franklin, and Beagles listen to a question from the audience This program featured three former Presidents of the influential American Chamber of Commerce in Japan. William Beagles (formerly head of Boeing Japan), William Franklin (formerly head of Weyerhaeuser Asia), and Ed Reilly (formerly head of Digital Equipment Corporation in Japan) spoke on what has worked best in the past and the likely keys to success in the future for U.S. Business. This program was co-sponsored by the Trade Development Alliance.

Terrie Lloyd addresses the Japan-America Society

Terrie Lloyd, Publisher of the leading publication of Japan's New Economy, focused his presentation on getting into the Japan market and covered a myriad of topics, including the technology and business niches that show the most promise, what it takes to get started there, and how to list in the Japanese growth stock markets after 18-30 months operations. He also covered some basics for talented people looking to work for technology firms in Japan.

Wireless Telecommunications Markets in Japan and China

Joana Zhang and Ron Tono of Tegic Communications

The Japan-America Society and the China Relations Council jointly presented this program highlighting one Northwest company’s operations in both the Japan and China markets. Ron Tono, Sr. Product Manager, and Joana Zhang, Marketing Communications, at Tegic, spoke about wireless telecommunications markets in these two countries and compared and contrasted their experiences in these two rapidly growing and often challenging markets.

Japanese Art Lecture Series
Seattle Asian Art Museum

Professor Yoshiaki Shimizu

In three programs co-sponsored by the Japan-America Society, attendees have heard Yoshiaki Shimizu, Professor of Japanese Art at Princeton University and a Visiting Scholar at the Seattle Art Museum, trace how American museums have represented Japan and Japanese art during the last 50 years, discuss the theme of copying in Japanese art, and lecture on the theme of calligraphy as a major form of art in the "Tale of Genji" scroll.



October 18, 2000

Reception and Dinner in Honor of
U.S. Ambassador to Japan Thomas S. Foley

JAS President Roger Williams, Ambassador Foley, and JAS President-Elect Mic Dinsmore

202 members and their guests attended a reception and dinner in honor of Thomas S. Foley, U.S. Ambassador to Japan since 1997, at the Washington Athletic Club in downtown Seattle. Ambassador Foley addressed the audience on "U.S.-Japan Relations: The Past as Prologue to the 21st Century." The program was co-sponsored by the Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle and the Washington Council on International Trade.

Legal Issues Impacting e-Commerce Business

Dax Hansen of Perkins Coie

Tom Bell and Dax Hansen, Attorneys at Law at Perkins Coie, presented an overview of key legal issues impacting e-commerce business, including jurisdiction, consumer protection, data protection and ownership,and privacy, and contrasted the approaches Japan and the U.S. take with respect to these legal issues.






December 5, 2000

Japan-America Society
Holiday Celebration 2000 Dinner and Auction

Holiday Celebration Co-Chairs, John Gissberg and Yasuo Kano, address attendees

Our largest event of the year was attended by 551 members and their guests at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center located at Pier 66 on the Seattle waterfront. The evening featured a dinner, entertainment by Echo Chorus, three silent auctions, a live auction, and a grand raffle drawing. Thanks to our Event Sponsor, American Airlines, 40 table sponsors, over 100 auction donors, and the over 70 volunteers who made the evening a grand success.
