What is discovery? Its learning something new for the first time. Can you imagine how exciting it must have been to sail to far away Japan in 1853? Through the Perry Expedition, we came to know Japan's people, geography, food and everyday customs. For the Japanese, it marked the beginning of their discovery of America and the West: its people, language, technology and culture.

Its your turn to discover more about the Perry Expedition and Japan's historic opening to the West. Experience this moment in history through the eyes of those who lived it: the explorer, the ship captain, the sailor and the artist by taking part in the following activities. A note to teachers.
