| About the Author Fred G. Notehelfer, Professor of History at UCLA, is the author of the introductory essay and descriptive notes that appear in the Black Ship Scroll Scholar's Tour. Dr. F.G. Notehelfer is Professor of History and Director of the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles. Dr. Notehelfer's areas of research include pre-modern & modern Japanese history. Dr. Notehelfer holds a B.A. from Harvard University and a Ph.D from Princeton University.
