Music and dancing played an important role during our visit to Shimoda. Perry never came ashore for official reasons without having his band play national songs with great spirit. The first time he came ashore, he brought along our choir and nearly half the city turned out to hear them! The next time he landed, without the choir, many Shimodans followed him and by all sorts of signs let him know how much they liked the singing and how they wished he would bring the choir along again.
