Matthew Perry was the leader of the 1853 expedition to Japan. He was well known as a distinguished naval officer. Here you can see Commodore Perry on the left of our artist's portrait. Perry was extremely serious and dignified in public, although he was affectionately called "Old Mat" by his men. Perry is sitting next to Henry Adams, his second in command. Adams was Captain of the flagships Mississippi, Susquehanna, and Powhatan on which Perry sailed.
