An artist named William Heine joined the Expedition to Japan. Photography was still experimental, and artists were needed to make careful drawings of scenes and events. Mr. Heine spent most of his time sketching, even at the most formal events in which Perry participated. He also wrote many descriptions of events and scenery in Shimoda in his journal. Here we see Heine sketching in the open air near a Japanese shrine to Benten, the goddess of beauty. What is he using to draw his picture?
