| Another important member of Perry's team was Dr. James Morrow. Dr. Morrow's job was to learn all he could about Japanese plants and flowers. Dr. Morrow explored Shimoda, collecting plants and flowers to sketch. As an expert in agriculture, he recorded species of Japanese plants and flowers yet unknown to Americans. You can see him here drawing a pine branch. Take a look at the table that he is using. See the checkerboard top?
