US-Japan Future Forum - April 2, 2008

We are pleased to report on the third official meeting of the US-Japan Future Forum which took place on April 2, 2008. The event was another resounding success with close to 40 attendees gathered for an evening of drinks, dinner and discussion. Here are some of the highlights:

  • As always, Sam Shepherd, Sempai Emeritus and President of NAJAS welcomed everyone and gave a brief update on NAJAS' activities.

  • Next, Barry Hirschfeld reported on the results of the member survey that was conducted in order to continually make improvements to the group.
Overwhelmingly, the feedback received was positive. Furthermore, several Kohai proposed the creation of "benkyokai" or study groups which would focus on different areas such as politics, education and the economy. The members expressed their excitement about this idea and we will follow up with everyone regarding their preferences.

  • Finally, we had three fantastic presentations. Professor Gerry Curtis, Sempai Emeritus, began with an update on the Japanese political situation. Next, Robby Feldman, Sempai and Chief Economist for Morgan Stanley Japan, gave his views on the Japanese economic and political situation. Finally, Pat Mohr, Kohai and Head of Quantitative Research for Nikko Citi Japan, gave an interesting perspective on the Japanese equity markets. A lively discussion then ensued among the Forum members.
